Map Types

Our Map Types & Classifications:
The approximate scale of our maps determines it's classification because a maps scale will determine the amount of detail that can be shown comfortably. For instance, a city scale map has a much larger scale than a state map, therefore it can display a much higher level of detail.

In order to simplify the different map classes, we have created 4 basic map definitions.
Please Note: It is commonplace that a complete map publication will have more than one map included in it's design, which often means there is a combination of several map scales used.

City Maps

1. City Scale Maps are one of the most detailed maps we make. They normally show all levels of streets with their names and will also show very accurate placement of other map elements such as place names, points of interest, boundaries, lakes and rivers etc.
For full City map publications: It is common to include a County Scale overview map inset and a Specialty map inset which shows greater detail in the central business district.

County Maps 2. County Scale Maps are the second most detailed maps we make. With somewhat less detail than our city maps, they normally show all levels of streets, only major streets are named and will still show very accurate placement of other significant map elements such as place names, points of interest, boundaries, lakes and rivers etc.
For full County map publications: It is common to include a State Scale overview map inset and a City map inset which shows greater detail in the Major City(s) within the County.
State Maps 3. State Scale maps are less detailed than City or County scale maps. They normally show only the most significant roads such as state, federal and interstate routes and very few other levels of roads or road names. State maps will show other significant map elements such as place names, interstate exits, major points of interest, boundaries, lakes and rivers etc.
For full State map publications: It is common to include a collection of small County Scale inset maps which shows more detail within the Major Cities of the state.
Specialty Maps 4. Specialty maps are all the maps that don't fit into any of the other map scale categories. Specialty maps will be either a much larger scale, or much smaller scale, than the maps listed above. For instance, a map of a school campus, golf course, state park or city business district would have to be a much larger scale than a city scale map in order to fit all the necessary detail comfortably. On the opposite end of the spectrum would be a map of the entire United States. That map would have to be made at a much smaller scale than a state scale map in order to fit the amount of territory covered on the map.
